Celebrating Our Achievements: We’ve Made a Difference in People’s Lives For a little less than 18 years, the DBTAC: Southeast ADA Center (Southeast DBTAC) and our State and Local Affiliate Network have, slowly but surely, been making a difference in people’s lives as we have worked in our communities to promote voluntary compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Over the past 18 years, there have been accounts of “big things” happening with the ADA—local, district and Supreme Court cases lost and won, negotiations and settlements with the Department of Justice and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission—all have captured national attention. However, it is those hundreds of little steps toward achieving access and nondiscrimination on the basis of disability that we think are the “truly big” story. All across America—and nowhere more clearly evident than here in the Southeast—individuals, with and without disabilities, have been making differences in people’s lives. It is these foot/wheelchair/scooter soldiers who are the real heroes in our fight for equal access, equal opportunity and equal participation in our communities. President Teddy Roosevelt advised, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” We disagree: to achieve lasting change in our communities, we need to speak softly and carry big yardsticks. Congratulations to our colleagues, friends and associates who make up the powerful Southeast DBTAC ADA Network. We’ve come a long way, baby! And we’re still on the move!
